Every year at this time we send holiday cards to our clients and contacts – we usually send real cards by snail mail. For such a simple a gesture it is quite costly – between design, printing and postage it quickly adds up to thousands of dollars. This year we opted to make a donation with that same money in honor of the clients and other contacts that have supported us throughout the year.
We asked our staff to suggest non-profits close to their hearts – there were lots of requests for tsunami and hurricane relief, the well-respected Red Cross and UNICEF, cancer research and several organizations that operate locally near each of our offices. In total we researched a dozen groups – we selected Room to Read! Founded by John Wood during the height of his career at Microsoft, Room to Read builds schools and libraries in rural villages. The organization also donates books and establishes computer labs for young children and teachers in the developing world.
We first saw John Wood and Room to Read a few years ago at Software 2004. Since then, they have donated their millionth book, constructed 140 schools and 2,400 libraries, and established close to 60 computer labs. The organization keeps its overhead low so that more than 90 percent of its contributions go directly to projects. Since its inception, Room to Read has impacted the lives of close to 1 million children. Ours is an industry with generous funds and it’s a pleasure to give a small slice of that back to the global community.
Happy holidays from everyone here at Horn Group!
